The Spice Girls - Alphabeat Supporting Spice Girls Would Have Been Weird

Alphabeat have said the concept of supporting the Spice Girls would have been "weird".

The Danish group were offered the chance to provide backing for the reunited girl band last year but chose to say no to opening for the Girl Power group at their UK shows.

Tabloid reports soon after Alphabeat's rejection of the Fab Five suggested that the Danes had "abandoned" Geri Halliwell and co, due to a dislike of the Spice Girls' back catalogue.

But speaking to inthenews.co.uk, Alphabeat's chief songwriter and guitarist Anders B denied the reason for turning down the tour was one of musical differences.

"We were [offered the tour] last year, but it was early days for us, we'd just moved here," he explained.

"We said 'no, thank you' but not as a cool statement or anything, I like some of the Spice Girls stuff.

"But it was just too weird for us to be suddenly here and nobody knew us and then to maybe play in front of 20,000 people who wouldn't have known who we were.

"And I honestly don't think it would have made much difference to us. The audience who go to a Spice Girls gig are pretty different to the kind of audience you play for as a new band."

Anders B, who had a top ten hit with debut single Fascination, added: "In fact, they're probably more the kind of audience we could start playing for now, now that we've had singles!

"It was just too weird for us to do at the time."

The Danes' latest single 10,000 Nights climbed to 16th in yesterday's single chart and their debut album This Is Alphabeat is out today (Monday June 2nd).
